100 Best Freeware Programs

Dear Members,

I found the following list of freeware in the form of a PDF which is copyrighted so I will not be able to pass it along. I found it a couple of weeks ago and as luck would have it, I can't find it again. Anyway, I was able to copy the table of contents for the document and if you are interested in any of the programs you can Google the name and get the information you need.

Please note, a lot of the titles on this list have been discussed in our meeting format.

It's important to remember when it comes to firewalls and antivirus, that you can only have one of each type of program running at once. Running multiple programs of each type can cause conflicts that make you less safe. Unfortunately, not every security suite can catch every threat. That's why your sheriff needs a deputy. For that I recommend Malwarebytes. It's capable of finding and removing threats that other software misses. Plus, the free version won't conflict with your existing antivirus. To get started, click the white Free Download button on the Malwarebytes home page. You'll want to leave the "Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" button checked after install. One thing to note is that the free version of Malwarebytes has no passive protection. That means you'll have to manually run it when you want to check your system. I would do this once a month. The paid version includes a real-time protection module, but the paid, pro version will conflict with the antivirus you already have. When you first install Malwarebytes, I recommend performing a full scan. The free version of Malwarebytes won't update its virus list automatically, so make sure you do that before you run every scan. The option can be found in the Updates tab.

One more thing: The free version of Malwarebytes is a great tool in the endless fight against malicious software, but if you're using the free version make sure you have always-on antivirus installed as well. You never know when a digital threat will strike.

October 1st Meeting

It was a lot of fun to see the Englewood Computer Club back in session. It appeared from the attendance our new meeting space at Elsie Quirk is just what we needed. A huge screen for those in the back, a huge long table to separate Paul and Ed and Ginger and Linda have their table at the door to greet each one with a smile.

Ed presented a small power point presentation on computer crashes and the power point slides will be posted on a separate page for member comment. Please add your experiences to the discussion.

Ed and Paul were stumped by a question about a pointer which shows up as four arrows pointing north/south and east/west. After the meeting it was discovered this cursor symbol is used to move an object around the page of a program. For example moving a square symbol in a word document.

The next meeting will by Oct 15 2013 @ 1:PM to 3:30PM.
